Tips for Learning Japanese Based on Your Natural Learning Style
The quickest
and easiest way to learn Japanese is to choose a method that comes most
naturally to you. Generally, there are three basic learning styles: visual,
auditory and kinesthetic. Visual learners are those who obtain the most
information through their sight, auditory through their hearing, and
kinesthetic through their sense of touch. I won’t go into too much detail
because this article is supposed to be about learning Japanese, but knowing
your main style will help you tremendously in choosing the most effective
method of learning Japanese. Of course it is important to utilize all these
resources for maximum results, but focusing on one avenue will make learning
Japanese quick, easy and painless.
1.
Websites:
For visual learners
Although textbooks were once
hailed as the authority for visual learners of Japanese, they have since taken
a step back. Today, websites are the gold standard because they are accessible
to anyone with a computer and an internet connection, are up to date with
cutting edge information, and can incorporate more than just still photos and text.
You will learn relevant and current Japanese knowledge, and moving diagrams and
pictures can really enhance the visual learning process. This method is also
fantastic for learning how to read and write the Japanese language, and will
drastically boost your reading comprehension.
2.
Audio
& Videos: For auditory learners
Videos and audio lessons are
perfect for those who rely on their hearing to learn. Audio lessons may be the
most convenient way to learn; you can simply load up the lessons on your iPod
and listen to them while you’re driving, going for a run, or doing just about
anything else. Although sometimes too much multi-tasking can actually make
learning less effective, so just make sure you aren’t defusing a bomb or
operating in the ER while listening. Another great trick is to watch Japanese
videos or shows. Next time you watch your favorite Japanese show have some
paper and pen and take notes on the vocabulary and phrases you hear. By
learning those words, not only will your vocabulary drastically improve, but
your pronunciation and accent will skyrocket too.
3.
Pen
Pals: For kinesthetic learners
You’re
probably thinking right now how can I learn Japanese through touch? It sounds
crazy but there is actually a really simple, often overlooked method: getting a
pen pal. There are tons of websites that help you get in touch with a Japanese
pen pal, or language exchange partner. They are invaluable tools for learning
and improving your Japanese. By physically writing and receiving mail, you can
engage your brain and better master Japanese. In addition, by speaking with
someone who is native or fluent in Japanese you can pick up subtle nuances in
grammar and sentence structure that you could not learn anywhere else. The
immersion into true Japanese communication will immensely benefit your Japanese
learning.
So
there are the top three customized ways to learn Japanese. And just because you
learn best through audio does not mean you shouldn’t try a website or get a pen
pal. In fact many websites and products try to incorporate a variety of methods
so anyone can learn Japanese with ease. Don’t limit yourself to one! These are
just some tips to help you get started and quickly propel your learning. For
